The year Indian pharma was reset
At one minute past midnight on 20 March 2026, semaglutide’s Indian patent expired. It set off the most crowded launch in the industry’s history: more than forty brands, a price collapse of over 90%, and a ₹1,900-crore category that grew and then stalled. Within months, the market learned a hard lesson. Retention beats acquisition.
Semaglutide was not the only shock. Three policy changes landed within nine months. Ten-minute medicine delivery scaled up under rules nobody had finished writing. AI moved from innovation-deck slide to working infrastructure. The Indian Pharma Outlook 2026 reads all of this through one lens: what does it mean for the decisions you make next quarter?
The Indian Pharma Outlook 2026 organises the year into five structural shifts
1. The GLP-1 mass market. A patent expiry created a new category, and then a plateau taught everyone why patient retention matters more than the first prescription.
2. The return of growth. The IPM posted six straight months of double-digit expansion, led by chronic therapies and the domestic market. Broad-based growth, however, is not the same as evenly shared growth.
3. The triple policy reset. GST 2.0 cut medicines to 5%, US tariffs put a one-year clock on the export engine, and the DPCO capped scheduled pricing. Every arrow points home.
4. The channel redrawn. Ten-minute pharmacy is operating on eight-year-old unfinished rules. Meanwhile, the uncounted market below the audit waterline is growing faster than the visible one.
5. AI from pilot to practice. Agentic AI is becoming CRM infrastructure. In India the real play is multiplying engagement in a way that is vernacular, archetype-led and UCPMP-clean.

What makes Indian Pharma Outlook 2026 different
It listens to the industry. A primary survey of 224 pharma professionals, carried out as the semaglutide launch unfolded, captures what the people doing the work actually expected and what they saw.
It keeps score. Most outlooks forget last year’s forecasts. This one grades them in public: what it got right, and what it didn’t.
It ends in action. Every section leads to decisions. You’ll find frameworks for brand plans, field-force design, portfolio choices and patient retention, not just charts to admire.
